One of my favorite parts of golfing is getting the opportunity to experience a new course. The challenge of new terrain, course design, and planning how to play through a new hole all are part of a great golfing experience. Kansas I-70 Association has compiled a Golf Guide of courses you can try from across the Kansas I-70 region. So get out there and plan your golf adventure!

WaKeeney

Big Creek Golf Course is the perfect way to get away for a couple hours and enjoy the scenic views of Northwest Kansas. This 9 hole public course opened in 1979 just south of the 1-70 and Highway 283 interchange. It is a long par 35 course that plays 3,213 yards. The fairways may run long, but they are wide open making it enjoyable for both amateurs and veterans of the game. The maintenance crew works year round to keep the greens in top shape. The greens are very large and easy to hit, but also offer challenges to experienced golfers. There are many elevation changes that will make the round fun and enjoyable as well. Most notable on this course is hole #7. This 176 yard par 3 stands out with an elevated tee box, narrow boundaries on either side, and an 80+ foot tree right in the middle of the fairway. Everyone that plays it will remember the challenging fun they had. Above all, there are no tee-times required most days of the week, so it will fit right in to your flexible schedule. Once you play Big Creek Golf Course it will be a destination for years to come.

Hays

The Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course is a public course located on the southwest edge of Hays just off the Highway 183 Bypass. The course was originally developed as a nine-hole, sand greens golf course in 1929, but has since been transformed into a beautiful and challenging 18-hole course with irrigated bluegrass fairways and bent grass greens.

The course is on land that was once part of the historic Fort Hays military outpost, offering a unique mix of characteristics that are common with both a links-style golf course and a parkland-style of golf course. Golfers must not only account for the prevailing southwest winds, deceiving elevation changes, and fast greens, but they must also navigate a variety of water hazards. Nine of the course’s 18 holes pose potential water hazards.

Lawrence

Eagle Bend Golf Course is the first golf course owned and operated by the City of Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department.

The course was voted as one of the top three golf courses in Kansas by the Kansas City Star, and has been named as a “Places to Play” by Golf Digest.

The start of the course features holes heavily wooded and sit in the shadow of the Wakarusa River, while the last six holes on the course are open with no trees.

Eagle Bend is dedicated to continuing the preservation of the environment and habitat of wildlife. Much wildlife inhabits the course’s surrounding areas, including the bald eagle, which played a major role in the naming of the course. During its construction, bald eagle sightings were plentiful and can still be seen in the fall and early spring.

Eagle Bend’s amenities include 18 holes of championship golf, a full-service pro shop, snack bar, driving range, a short iron range, practice putting and chipping greens, club repair and custom club fitting and golf instruction by PGA professionals.
