The challenge of new terrain, course design, and planning how to play through a new hole all are part of a great golfing experience. It’s super easy to get in a round of golf when visiting Oakley. The Oakley Country Club and Municipal Golf Course is open to the public. If the club house is not open, greens fees can be deposited outside and players can tee up anytime and walk the 9 hole, par 35 course. Carts are available to rent when the club house is open. After your round, stop in for a refreshment, snack or meal. The bar opens at 2 pm and the kitchen is open daily at 5 pm. There is no open golf during league play. For full information, visit their website and follow them on Facebook. If disc golf is your game, head over to Annie Oakley Park. The park offers fun for the whole family.
Big Creek Golf Course is the perfect way to get away for a couple hours and enjoy the scenic views of Northwest Kansas. This 9 hole public course opened in 1979 just south of the 1-70 and Highway 283 interchange. It is a long par 35 course that plays 3,213 yards. The fairways may run long, but they are wide open making it enjoyable for both amateurs and veterans of the game. The maintenance crew works year round to keep the greens in top shape. The greens are very large and easy to hit, but also offer challenges to experienced golfers. There are many elevation changes that will make the round fun and enjoyable as well. Most notable on this course is hole #7. This 176 yard par 3 stands out with an elevated tee box, narrow boundaries on either side, and an 80+ foot tree right in the middle of the fairway. Everyone that plays it will remember the challenging fun they had. Above all, there are no tee-times required most days of the week, so it will fit right in to your flexible schedule. Once you play Big Creek Golf Course it will be a destination for years to come.
The Fort Hays Municipal Golf Course is a public course located on the southwest edge of Hays just off the Highway 183 Bypass. The course was originally developed as a nine-hole, sand greens golf course in 1929, but has since been transformed into a beautiful and challenging 18-hole course with irrigated bluegrass fairways and bent grass greens.
The course is on land that was once part of the historic Fort Hays military outpost, offering a unique mix of characteristics that are common with both a links-style golf course and a parkland-style of golf course. Golfers must not only account for the prevailing southwest winds, deceiving elevation changes, and fast greens, but they must also navigate a variety of water hazards. Nine of the course’s 18 holes pose potential water hazards.
