WaKeeney Celebrates It’s 70th Anniversary
There are just a few days until WaKeeney, Kansas celebrates their 70th year as The Christmas City of the High Plains on November 28th. This tradition started in 1950 when a handmade 35-foot tree was created to adorn the center of town.
With the help of volunteers from around the area, and a $5,000 grant, WaKeeney Travel & Tourism Director, Cathy Albert has been hard at work over the past year to make the 70th Anniversary of the tree lighting even more special. Volunteers Kirk Johnston and Mark Wood have constructed a new house for Santa to greet children. Others worked to prep and paint new decorations throughout WaKeeney’s North Pole Park.
Visitors to WaKeeney can also visit The Trego County Historical Society Museum’s exhibit which details the history of the Christmas City of the High Plains.
The Tree Lighting Ceremony on November 28th is free. Organizers are asking that visitors wear a mask and practice social distancing during the event.

WaKeeny’s light display will continue until after New Year’s Day.
